Cold War DBQ Assignment Background: 1. The Soviet Union was not included in the American/British creation of the atomic bomb during the Second World War. They felt they were doing their part in the alliance and did not like being left out of something so important. This helped to further cement distrust. 2. Instead, in their struggle for global power and influence, they engaged in ongoing psychological warfare and in regular indirect confrontations in other regions of the world. Document 1: 3. The "iron curtain" was a dividing line because it was an imaginary line that separated Eastern and Western Europe. The countries that lied behind the line were called the Soviet sphere. To restore economic health to the world, the U.S. needed to help rebuild Europe from the aftermath of the war. Document 2: 4. The type of governments that Churchill believes are governing Eastern Europe are communist governments. In Churchill's opinion, communist governments do not represent what the allies fought for in WWII.
