9/10/2013 1 A chemical plant generates 2100 kg/h of wastewater containing 0.75 wt % pollutant A that must be treated before the water can be sent to a municipal treatment facility. You are asked to design a process that can meet the regulation requirement of 90 % removal of the pollutant. The pollutant A is volatile and can be removed by air stripping . Determine the minimum airflow rate (kg/h) required for the process and the number of equilibrium stages required if the stripping is carried out with 2100 kg/h of fresh air. Draw a figure and label with known information and what you are suppose to find 1 Since the equilibrium relationship is in wt% we can stick with mass balances for everything (x N , y N+1 ) (x 0 , y 1 ) Operating line has to fall on this line What is changing operationally with the various red lines? L/V ratio is changing Since L is fixed then V is increasing as we decrease the slope of the operating line Q: What happens when you reach 1 stage? When does this happen graphically and what does it say about multi stage vs. single stage?
