< 30. What role does imagination play in producing knowledge about the world? > Knowledge and Knower Object 1:Fractals in Maths IB This commentary discusses the three objects that I have chosen, and how it relates to the IA prompt what role does imagination play in producing knowledge about the world. Also, the theme that I would also use is Knowledge and Knower. Imagination is the ability to present something which can not be presented in the senses. The object I have chosen above is one of the mathematics concepts I have learned which is fractals. Fractals are infinitely complex patterns that are similar and keep repeating itself over and over in a feedback loop. Fractals can be related to imagination as these kinds of concepts help to create ideas using the mind, that defy the physical restrictions. Infinity in mathematics is not a number, but rather it is a concept that shows that there is no end. In the real world, we do not have something like that and infinity is not getting larger as it is already fully formed. Even if we can think of the biggest number that exists in the universe, that can not even compete with the concept of infinity. As it is something that is impossible to measure as it is endless, so we have to use a more imaginative approach rather than factual accountability. Only then can we achieve our certainty on this knowledge. One of the famous problems that involved the concept of infinity is Gabriel's horn, where the object has an infinite surface area but a finite volume. Many researches have proven the results of this hypothesis, like in the Painter’s Paradox. This just shows that paradox in the
