Chemical and Physical Properties of Water & Seawater Chemistry review: Atom (smallest particle of an element that has all the properties of that element, each atom has a distinct number of protons = atomic number)] Molecule (a group of bonded atoms) Peculiar properties of water: -physical states - Composition of the water molecule = 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom The water molecule is asymmetrical, h atoms shifted to one side, though the molecule has a net charge of zero, one side has a positive charge and the other a negative charge, this polar nature gives water many of its unusual properties Liquid water molecules are hydrogen bonded, the polar nature makes water molecules more strongly self attracting than most liquids -solvent properties: -Dissolved solids=dissolved ions (ion: an atom that has gained or lost one or more electrons) anion=negative charged ion, cation=positively charged ion Greater power to dissolve than most other liquids because of its polarity (oil is non polar, so it doesn’t dissolve in water (so oils protect our tissue) Water dissolving (hydrating) a salt: Allows living things to obtain and retain nutrients -heat capacity: Amount of E (energy) needed to raise T (temp.) Liquid water = 1 calorie/1 degree C (1 cal with change 1gm of water by 1 degree C 1 cal/ g/C) Highest of almost anyother substance, it’s a ‘Heat Sponge’ -Heat: energy produced by vibrations of atom and molecules, Total energy of the molecules Temperature=average energy of the molecules Result of water’s high heat capacity:
