Lecture 26 – November 10, 2017 Schoenberg was most likely the first non-romantic composer – modernist - 1912 – Pierrot Lunaire - Pre WW1 aesthetics - Mahler, in his later works, used different techniques at times and was not seen as romantic by the people of the time o We consider him romantic - Debussy is still romantic - Stravinsky has late romantic elements – drew on Nationalism (folk tunes, old countries) - Difference between late romantic and modernist is their perspective towards the audience o Late romantics wanted audience to like it Would prioritize non-crunchy dissonances Catchy, tuneful melodies o Modernist did not care Dissonant Not necessarily tuneful Relationship to form Sonata form but not meant for public to hear it o Uses it as framework but not to communicate Affect Creepy Difficult to engage with Extort expressionism to such an extent that it would break the connection with the audience Texture Mahler influence Combinations of certain instruments and not whole orchestra
