1. The United States is known around the world for its democratic freedoms and for the historical struggle to reduce formal and informal practices of racial exclusion. However, some observers, including your professor, have noted some paradoxical performance in this regard. What are three of the most important ways in which American state and local voting participation is weakening? Give three important and distinct reasons for these. -paradox is that America is telling everyone to use us as an example for democracy, especially our electoral system. However, we have the lowest voting turnout out when compared to most countries. 1. Party identification and impact on turnout -Party-in-the-electorate is on the decline -more people are considering themselves independent -Historical trends show that voter turnout is higher when there is stronger partisanship in the government -many republicans and democrats agree on issues at the state and local government level 2.
