Outline Solving Polynomial Equations Solving Rational Equations Rational Exponents Applications Polynomial Equations Definition A polynomial equation is an equation that can be written in the form a n x n + a n - 1 x n - 1 + · · · + a 2 x 2 + a 1 x + a 0 = 0 where n is a nonnegative integer, a 0 , a 1 , a 2 , . . . , a n - 1 , a n are real number constants (called coefficients ) and a n 6 = 0. We call a n the leading coefficient and we call n the degree of the polynomial. Linear equations are polynomial equations of degree 1. Quadratic equations are polynomial equations of degree 2.
