Unformatted text preview: plasmid carries
two genes that direct production of: 1.
2. Octopine Ti plasmid Agrobacterium tumefaciens
1. Agrobacterium transfers
the Ti plasmid to the plant
by conjugation. 2. Ti plasmid is
inserted into a plant
chromosome. 3. Plant expresses Ti genes:
• rapid plant growth (tumor)
• plant makes octopine 4. Agrobacterium feeds on the
octopines!!! Agrobacterium tumefaciens
What if a genetic engineer removed the growth hormone
gene and the octopine gene from the Ti plasmid…
And replaced them with a gene that codes for Vitamin A
synthesis? Golden Rice Who eats the Vitamin A?
250,000 - 500, 000 children Transduction
TRANSDUCTION: transfer of
genetic material between two
bacteria… PHAGE: Phage replication Makes many copies
of phage chromosome
and lots of phage
Fig 7.34 Phage replication Normal infectious phage TRANSDUCING PARTICLE Transducing particles Transducing particle transfers _____________DNA NOT phage
DNA Theoretically, any piece of the chopped up host chromosome
could be transferred...
