Qualitative Sociological Research Methods Writing Assignment #3 SOC 471 Nori Henk Writing’Assignment’#3:’Categories’and’Relationships The’purpose’of’this’study’is’to’understand’the’role’and’purpose’of’the’OAT’ Office’and’ Transfer’Leaders’in’relation ’ to’incoming’transfer’students.’ Through’a’ series’of’fieldwork’and’interviews,’I’have’collected’a’total’of’five’pieces:’two’field’ notes,’one’focusing’on’a’transfer’event’and’the’other’focusing’on’a’transfer’leader’ meeting,’and’three’interviews,’two’interviewing’transfer’leaders’and’one’ interviewing’a’student’who’is’not’a’transfer’leader,’but’works’for’the’office’of’ Orientation’and’Transition ’ (OAT).’After’ a’long’month’and’a’half’of’ collecting’data’ and’ assessing’ it,’a’shift’has’occurred’in’my’research’question.’ Initially,’my’focus’for’my’re search’involved’studying’the’nature’of’transfer’ students’ from’the’perspective’of’a’transfer’student ;’however,’my’p rimary’focus’for’ my’research’currently’ involves’studying’the’Transfer’Leaders’and’the’role’of’the’ OAT’office .’ My’final’research’questions’incl ude:’ Why does the Office of Orientation and Transition exist in relation to transfer students? How do transfer leaders play a role in leading transfer students? How do transfer leaders perceive and evaluate the role they play, the transfers they lead, and the OAT office they work for? After’processing’the’data,’I’have’developed’5’categories’with’their’sub’ categories:’ 1. The’Nature’ and’Identity’ of’Transfer’students’ a. Longing’ for’a’community ’ b.
