Functional impairment is a loss of functional capacity affecting a person’s ability to work that results from the person’s medical condition. Appearance Poor or disheveled appearance could be indictive of mental illness Speech Poor speech could be indicative of a brain disorder. Level of consciousness (alertness and orientation) Low LOC could be indicative of the exacerbation of an illness, or the person could be on drugs or medications Attention span Short attention span could indicate a mental illness such as ADD or ADHD.
