1 Part of STUDY GUIDE FOR EXAM 1 (and comprehensive final): EVOLUTION "CONTROVERSY" Note: some ?s have hints at bottom of last page A lot of this reviews your earlier learning about what evolution is and evidence for it. Roughly what percent of scientists accept evolution: 1%, 50%, >90%? When data and a famous scientist conflict, do scientists go with the data or the person? Does science deal with 1) what is or with 2) what morally ought to be? Does science address whether or not there is/are any God(s)? Why not? "Science is godless in the same way that plumbing is." Explain. Does this mean plumbers and scientists are necessarily atheists? Creationists sometimes say that evolution cannot be proven and that there is no direct evidence (things you can see with your own eyes). What is wrong with each of these assertions? Why do scientists avoid saying "prove" or "proof," instead being more cautious, more tentative in their conclusions? After examining the arguments of intelligent design "theory" proponents, did scientists reject it or say it was a great theory. (*See Hint 1 at bottom of page) Name one piece of direct (saw with my own eyes) evidence for evolution. (*See Hint 2) When I say that you have a heart, am I basing this on direct or indirect evidence? What about when I say the earth goes around the sun? In other words, has any astronaut or other person directly seen with his or her own eyes that the earth goes around the sun? Why do most scientists refer to evolutionary theory as such instead of as “Darwinism?” (Hint 3)
