Allende's appointed armychief, Augusto Pinochet was the leader of the militaryjuntathat stagedacoupto overthrow the socialist government of President SalvadorAllende on September 11, 1973. As the national police stormed thepresidential palace, Allende gave his last speech, in which he vowed tostay in the presidential palace. However, he was found dead aftershooting himself during an attack on the presidential palace inSantiago. In December 1974, the ruling military junta appointedPinochet Supreme Head of the nation.
