This first week of class we are asked to read the first chapter in both Sports in Society by Jay Coakley and Critical Sports Studies Reader by Nicholas Villanueva. These two readings discuss the importance behind the study of sport and why we study it. In his work, Coakley focuses on using sociology to study sports. In his chapter, he argues that we study sports because they are socially significant activities for individuals all around the world. They don't just provide exercise for people, but also happiness and excitement, good experiences and lasting friendships. Author Villanueva also looks into the importance of why we study sports, and more specifically, an explanation of why theory is important to the study of sports, culture and society. The two readings discuss similar topics, but also dive into different and more specific points. As mentioned above, they are similar in the way that they discuss the broad importance of studying sports. They also express social issues relating to racism, ethnicity, and gender, and
