Lucas K. Vascocu  1.19.07 Biology 131 Algae Growth’s Effects of Saltwater Introduction The primary uses of an indicator are to characterize current status and to track or predict  significant change (EPA, 2007).   Ankistrodesmus  is the experimental organism used as the  biological indicator (Colgan, 2007).  Environments can change tremendously from pollution.  Pollution can suprise a habitat and therefore a biological indicator can be used to foreshadow  events on a larger scale.  Algal indicators provide relatively unique information concerning  ecosystem condition compared with commonly used animal indicators (McCormick, 1994).  Algae respond rapidly and predictably to a wide range of pollutants and, thus, provide potentially  useful early warning signals of deteriorating conditions and the possible causes (McCormick,  1994). The purpose of this experiment was to study the effects of a pollutant, in this case
