CHEM 110 Online Lab Instructions for Exp. 5 Formation and Naming of Ionic Compounds When an unknown solution is tested, one may wonder what is present and in what concentration. If it is a solution containing ions, then to determine what ions are present, qualitative tests are carried out. Qualitative tests determine the identity of something, or a quality. If one were to determine an amount, then a quantitative test would be performed to get an actual amount, or quantity. Both qualitative and quantitative tests are collectively referred to as analytical chemistry. In this lab exercise, a video will be viewed showing procedures similar to what would be done in an actual lab to perform qualitative tests to determine the presence of some common ions and what happens when they react in double replacement reactions to form a precipitate (solid product). Recall that anions have a negative charge. They are charged atoms (ions) that gain electrons--electrons are NEGATIVE, so gaining something negative gives a negative charge.
