Cell Movement or Cell Growth: they need to move to a new location for normal development to occur. For plants, they don’t move, but the change orientation of cell division. Plant cells are encased in stiff cell walls and cannot move. They change in the direction of cell growth, which results in the proper formation of straight and bent stems, leaf veins and other structures. Changes in cell size can make it “move”. When plants grow in the direction of sunlight, it is because of changes in the stem. In response to signals from cells that receive light, cells on one side of the stem expand – causing the entire shoot to bend the other way.
