One of the most recognizable names in English literature history is John Ronald Reuel Tolkien. Tolkien had many accomplishments throughout his life. Tolkien was an English writer, poet, philologist, and university professor. At one time of his life, Tolkien was a close friend of C.S. Lewis, which many contribute Tolkien to be the main inspiration for C.S. Lewis to write The Chronicles of Narnia. Tolkien was a major scholar in both Old and Middle versions of the English language. Tolkien is best known for his high fantasy works The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion. Tolkien was one of the most respected scholars of his time; however, he only wrote and published a few “scholarly” essays in his lifetime. One of Tolkien’s most well known essays is “On Fairy Stories.” In this essay, Tolkien tries to define what a fairy story is, and defends and persuades others to study the genre.Tolkien speaks on the matter of the very nature of fairy-stories.
