2 Samuel David takes his place as king General Outline 2-4: David as king of only Judah 5-20: David as king of all Israel 21-24: Appendices- other events from the life of David 2-4 David as king of Judah David was first made king of Judah only at Hebron. Ishbosheth, son of Saul, was made king of Israel by Abner, Saul’s commander @ Mahanaim. There followed a period of civil strife between Judah & Israel: Abner leads the forces of Israel and Joab, David’s commander, leads the forces of Judah. Ultimately Abner breaks his ties with Ishbosheth, son of Saul. David receives Abner & his offer of the crown of Israel. Soon, Joab murders Abner who had killed Joab’s brother Asahel. Ishbosheth assassinated; David has assassins slain. 5-20 David as King of Israel David ruled all Israel for 33 years 2 Samuel 5-10: The Good Times of David’s Kingship o David anointed king of all Israel
