It seeks to highlight the relationship between manner and matter by using numerous impressions that have the capacity to influence the character’s awareness based on his line of thinking. Instances of stream of consciousness in the book is evident when its opens up with monosyllabic baby-talk while describing Stephen’s encounters as a baby. This represents an infant’s thoughts and other individuals’ baby language as they communicate. “Once upon a time and a very good time it was there was a moocow coming down along the road and this moocow…His father told him that story: his father looked at him through a glass: he had a hairy face.” (Joyce 7). This provides the reader with a sneak peek of Stephen’s consciousness by illuminating his intellectual development. Another instance is when Stephen undergoes treatment which is brought up as a mere suggestion rather than emphasizing on it “as he walks through Dublin, stray thoughts flicker through his mind like fishes, thoughts suggested by whatever business he is about, by things that catch his eye in the streets, by smells that assail his nostrils; and all the time, coming sometimes
