Hansen’s Disease Leprosy = middle ages, Hansen’s disease = today o “Leper” carries disgrace with name Hansen’s disease is caused by varicella’s o Doesn’t always cause disfiguring o Not contagious, only 5% can get it Leprosy – anything that causes your skin to look terrible o Considered to be super contagious o People born under the sign of Saturn were super susceptible Retrospective diagnosis – take what we know today and apply it to the past o Can’t do that for leprosy o We know today that Hansen’s disease can come and go Leprosy o Lepros – scale o Lepin – to peel Tuberculoid – the less disfiguring one o Areas of skin that lack sensation o Can’t see, but can feel Lepromatous – visibly disfigured o Swellings, infections, rotting Hansen’s disease is still with us today… II. Diagnosing and Treating Lepers Primary authority for leprosy in middle ages –> the bible Leviticus, ch. 13 – the priest diagnosed leprosy
