Analysis of Events:Helen Petrakis is a 52-year-old woman married to her husband, John. They have four children who are of adult age. The children currently live at home. Helen is under significant stress while caring for her mother-in-law. Alec, one of her children, offered to move in with his grandmother to help relieve stress, at least that was the reason given. However, he failed to properly care for his grandmother. Helen’s therapist then discovered that he had a history of substance abuse issues. The high stress levels eventually led Helen to the hospital exhibiting symptoms of an anxiety attack. (Plummer, 2013)Bowen’s Family Theory:Two concepts that can be used from Bowen’s family theory with this family are: triangles and nuclear family emotional system. In the case of the Petrakis family, the nuclear family emotionalsystem, in particular, symptoms in a spouse, plays a role. Brown (1999) describes Bowen’s view on this. Spouses begin defining who they are according to the reactions of the other. In this case history, the Petrakis family has more traditional roles.
