Sherry YuanDoublethinkDoublethink is the acceptance of two contradictory ideas of beliefs at the same time. It is a way to control one’s mind so that they will submit to one’s power. Control cannot be fully achieved unless you know that the people are loyal even when they are thinking. This idea forces one to become weak and believe that something negative is something positive. In the novel 1984 by Orwell, the use of doublethink brainwashed the people and made them under their control.The importance of doublethink to the Party’s control of Oceania is that their minds will always be in control. The slogans used in the book such as “ignorance is strength”, “war is peace”, and “slavery is freedom” all have the purpose of brainwashing the people to believe what the Party wanted. If you are ignorant you lack knowledge and that is exactly what the Party wanted. They wanted you to know less and not have any knowledge of what they are living
