Biblical punishment – childlessness Pope issued dispensation – marriage was consummated Erasmus described this as the paradigm of Christian marriage But Henry had affairs Catherine got routinely pregnant, but ended early or baby did not survive first hours 1522 – Catherine 40 years old, only 1 daughter (Mary) Proof that they were living under God’s curse (Catherine adamantly denied this) Chruch needed to withdraw dispensation Henry had an advisor (wosely) – 2 nd most powerful person after the king/ cardinal / candidate for the Papacy Relative of Catherine (Charles V) 1
