This play was turned into various productions through the years, one of which Katherine Hepburn starred in as Amanda Wingfield. Laura, the daughter of Amanda, has a disability and cannot seem to figure out who she really is due to her mothers constant nagging. This play depicts the ways in which people try to find themselves. One of the main ways this is done is through the metaphorical birds. The type of bird the person is compared to speaks true to who they are and their thoughts and emotions. The imagery of birds helps the reader of this play have a better understanding of who the character is and why they are the way they are. Tom mentions Amanda’s “hawk-like attention” (12). This is describing how Tom feels towards Amanda and how she interacts with him. Hawks are predators, therefore animals are immediately intimated of them.
