    How Do We Develop? Stage Theories Development is uneven and occurs in short bursts  (Stairs) Continuous Theories Development is gradual and occurs at a steady rate  (Ramp)

    Brain Development The bad news You are born with all the neurons  you will ever have As soon as you are born you start  to lose neurons By   age 20 you will have lost  90% of your neurons (synaptic  pruning) As you age things go wrong Brain damage (youth &  plasticity) De-myelination – MS Shrinkage – memory loss Cell death – stroke The good news Neurons become infinitely more  complex There are things you can do to  slow the process Stem cell research shows  promise of curing many brain  disorders
