Chiara Mouton March 27, 2013 Sociology 494-002 Dr. Margot Hasha Women’s Rights Are Human Rights” (My views on the film Half the Sky ) The film Half the Sky , by husband and Wife Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, is a must see for all women and men. Sheryl and Nick are both truly inspirational people. After working in the business department of the New York Times , they noticed the much indifference towards women and girls around the world. This led the power couple to than write the book Half the Sky . Following the book Nick goes to travel some of these countries where women are oppressed. He brings along six different actresses, one for each country. Sadly, we all know famous people always draw the media’s attention. After watching this documentary I really came to terms with all the limitations women still have throughout the world. In a way I do somewhat feel blessed for all the opportunities and rights we as women have here in the United States, yet I that we are subjected to these rights anyways and we still have a few limitations placed before us. It is sad to realize that women and girls all over the world are still being oppressed. Will there ever be a day that women around the world will have all their “Human Rights”? The first place we took a look at on the documentary was Sierra Leone. Actress Eva Mendes went along with Nick to get a firsthand view of what Sierra Leone’s females were dealing with. Here the poverty level is very high. Women have little to no voice among the men there. Many of the women in Sierra Leone live in fear of men. In their country 80% to 90% women go through violence and abuse from men. Women there are being raped every day.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
