Molar Mass of a Solid Abstract A pure liquid has specific characteristics and properties; also it has a specific melting point, boiling point, and freezing point. However, the melting point, boiling point, and freezing points are entirely dependent on that liquid being pure. With the entrance of another liquid or solid, the points are changed and must be recalculated to take into consideration the moles of the new foreign liquid or solid. This experiment compared the freezing points of pure cyclohexane and a solution of cyclohexane and an unknown solute to determine that the unknown solute had a molar mass of 154.09 g / mol . We compared the freezing points of pure cyclohexane and a solution of cyclohexane and the unknown solute and used these measurements, while considering freezing point depression of a solution versus the pure solvent, as well as the fact that the proportionality constant for cyclohexane was 20 ( °C*kg / mol ) to come up with our molar mass of the unknown solute.
