Worshipers were encouraged to abandon themselves to the spirit, to let Christ take possession of their bodies. Services in these churches included "shout" songs and "witness" rituals, with great emphasis on freedom of expression and rhythm. Eventually, churches added mused musical instruments such as drums, tambourines, triangles, pianos and guitars. The Holiness churches used Tindley's songs as the models and modified them to include opportunities for the congregation to improvise free interpolations (such as “Hallelujah”) and to use instrumental accompaniment.
