As gospel music rose in popularity, the orthodox black churches continued to disapprove of it, banning it from their services. The fundamental reason for the disapproval was gospel’s connection with the sanctified and holiness churches. Many black leaders resisted these churches and the gospel music that evolved in these churches because they felt the services and music too strongly emphasized African cultural roots. “Progressive blacks” were trying to help their people by encouraging them to try to assimilate into the European- based white culture of mainstream America represented in the orthodox churches. Thomas Dorsey was not supportive of the undisciplined and raucous nature of much of the singing that was occurring in the holiness churches. He criticized choirs for taking "too many embellishments that may be mistaken for spirit" and condemned the "loud vociferous singing, uninspired gesticulations, or self- incurred spasms of the body."1 But he did consciously attempt to bring emotional fervor to his music. This contrasted with the staid and disciplined music of the orthodox churches, and he was often rebuked. As Dorsey himself stated, This thing of gospel, it was something new; they didn't take to it well. Preacher don't want you singing no gospel.
