The term “discovery” implies to locate or identify something unclaimed or unknown; one cannot “discover” a land that is already occupied. Likewise, the “New World” was only new to invading Europeans, and clearly not new to the inhabitants of the Americas. It is important to make these distinctions as we continue to promote greater understanding and appreciation for the diversity of people within the United States and all of the Americas. Where the peoples of these civilizations originally came from continues to be debated, and will be addressed in the next chapter on Native Americans. But at this point, it is important to remember that when we speak of “America” in the context of this book, we are speaking of the United States, recognizing that the United States itself is only one political and geographic entity within a much larger historical and geographic context that is also “America....
