Freire Freire makes many important points about the importance of making the lessons vivid and real to the students, such as with reading, and about the virtues a teacher should possess. I feel that his thoughts on reading are relevant and helpful for practical use as a teacher, but his list of virtues teachers should possess seemed a bit unrealistic because he did not offer specific strategies which could be used to develop these qualities. Treating reading as an interactive and welcoming activity makes children much more likely to really put effort into, and be able to make sense of, this important skill. As with all topics in our curriculum, learning the material is much easier and more fulfilling when the students can see how it fits in with their everyday lives. There is a certain feeling of urgency and motivation to learn when the material is shown to pertain to them as an individual, and to show them ways in which reading will bring them freedom and independence to explore parts of the world they could not accomplish without literacy.
