Miller Dr. Abbott English 1102-207 September 26, 2007 The Low Men of Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman Arthur Miller’s play Death of a Salesman is a tragic story displaying how greed and misinterpretation of the American Dream can tear an American family. Aspiring to the American Dream naturally involves hard work, education, and sound principles. On the contrary, some attempt to short cut this notion by creating their own path. Once their destination is reached and results begin to emerge, success is no longer achievable. In Death of a Salesman , Willy Loman fits the same stereotype by seeking to outwit the American Dream by creating his own path, a determined by social acceptance. Although this creates problems for himself, his thirty-four year old unstable, ungrounded son Biff is an example of how the apple does not fall far from the tree. Death of a Salesman provides a comparison of a father and son’s struggles to achieve the American Dream and the flaws they experience along the way. Hard work, focus, and dedication are not traits possessed by Willy and Biff Loman. The writer never revels whether Willy graduated high school, but we do know that he was on the road travelling as a salesman at the age of eighteen, seeking his version of the American Dream. It may be possible that Willy did not take his education seriously and dropped out of high school. Or of greater possibly, Willy did graduate high school but never pursued a higher education. Either way, as a father, he did not teach his son Biff the importance of studying, graduating high
