Self-Test #2 Aguilar, Wea Dona M. Bachelor of Arts in Political Economy 1-2 Write a short paper (1,000 words min) that addresses the contemporary condition of the Philippines by applying both the dependency theory and the world system theory. By doing so, students must apply the theories discussed in this module to shed light on the present circumstance of the country's economy. Students are advised to use newspaper articles to try and make sense of the Philippine's position in the world economy. Philippine Colonialism by Spain destroyed our cultural pattern of production. We were taught that our sole purpose is to supply the larger communities, as John Stuart Mill argued, an English economist and philosopher. We were forced to do labor for the core countries and with their influence, we continue to fit with their standard and mold in the economic hierarchy of the world economy, we become dominated by interests and policies that originate from core countries. As time pass by, the Philippines was declared as a developing country, but why are we still dependent on the core countries and it is hard for our country to become a core country? There were theories as to why developing countries fail to develop or couldn’t catch up to developed countries are because of the lack of rapid convergence, which happens because a state has little incentives to be able to open their markets internationally wherein countries have more advanced technologies, or a state is composed of poor political institutions which stopped a certain nation from developing. Since the winning of Rodrigo Duterte for the presidential elections, he launched several projects and programs to increase the economic rate and industrialization in the country and also decrease the poverty rate, unemployment rate, and crime rate in the country. First is the famously infamous “War on Drugs” carried and led by the former PNP Chief Ronald de la Rosa, this project is known for violating basic human rights by killing suspected criminals without proper and thorough investigation. Extrajudicial killings continue to occur for political activists, Community leaders, and Human rights defenders under Duterte Administration.
