External Performance Review – “Dreamgirls” From the writer of the Chicago , Bill Condon presents the award winning film adaptation, Dreamgirls (2006). Dreamgirls is Broadway musical written by Henry Krieger and Tom Eyen based upon the 1960’s integration of African American show business into society. With its captivating songs, Dreamgirls displays themes of the ups and downs of fame and show business. This review will discuss the plot, setting, and actor’s performance. Before diving into the review, a brief summary is necessary. The story begins with 3 Broadway singers called the “Dreams” (Jennifer Hudson, Beyoncé Knowles, and Anika Noni Rose). After a losing performance in a talent show, the Dreamettes are greeted by Curtis Taylor Jr. (Jamie Foxx), a used car salesman that eventually becomes their manager. The first thing Curtis does as manager is get them the spot as backup singers for James ‘Thunder’ Early, a current popular sensation. As the plot progresses, Curtis adopts James and other singers which leads to fame and fortune for all of them. Later on a
