Individuals that are genetically male will develop as phenotypic females due to reduced effectiveness of the male hormone ­producing gland. Lastly, Wolbachia can cause male embryos to abort early in development so that only females can survive, essentially killing off the males early on. Feminization of insect populations is obviously beneficial for Wolbachia because they can propagate efficiently.
