“Am I a Soldier of the Cross?” (E‐reserves Unit 3) No$ce technique of lining out a leader sings out (or chants) a line of text that is then echoed by a group Example: First verse of “Am I a Soldier of the Cross?” Am I a soldier of the cross, a follower of the Lamb? And shall I fear to own His cause, or blush to speak His name?

Technique of lining out was not exclusive to African Americans But lined hymns called “Dr. WaFs songs” by some older African Americans whether wriFen by WaFs or not; and, Tradi$on of lined hymn singing called “Dr. WaFs singing” (Reagon and Brevard 1994) Note the slow tempo, is characteris$c of Dr. WaFs songs/singing
