Page 1 Questions 1. What state did Charles Sumner represent in the U.S. Senate? Charles Sumner represented Massachusetts in the U.S. Senate. 2. Infer: Why do you think Preston S. Brooks beat Charles Sumner with the cane? I think that Preston S. Brooks beat Charles Sumner with a cane because in 1856 Charles delivered a speech that attacked some of his colleagues for supporting slavery. One on the colleagues would be senator Andrew P. Butler who had proslavery views so Charles sneered at him and made fun of his impaired speech which caused Preston to hit him on the head with his cane for making fun of his cousin Andrew. 3. How did the doctrine of popular sovereignty aim at solving the issue of slavery? The doctrine of popular sovereignty aimed at solving the issue of slavery because it allowed people to have the deciding vote which made all of the people of their own states have a say in what they want. 4. What were Lincoln’s view on the issue of slavery? Abraham Lincoln had moderate views on slavery. He pledged to stop the spread of slavery but he didn;t want to interfere with the Southerners Slaves. Basically Abraham Lincoln wanted slavery to be contained so it wouldn’t spread and by containing it usually things die out. 5. Making inferences: Why did Southerners fear (or disdain) the election of Lincoln?
