ANTH240 – 9-18-07 Research Design: Where to work? Methods used? Type of work: Academic -problem oriented -specific research hypothesis -excavation to test hypothesis Cultural research management -based on impact on landscape -CRM firms are usually archaeologists attached to engineering firms -mandated by federal, state and county laws -to see if anything exists that is worth protecting, or if building can continue Finding and Assessing Sites -excavation costly and destroys site to uncover -less intrusive methods available -scale research questions to level of effort wished to expend -3 stages survey, testing and data recovery (phases) Survey : discovery and rapid evaluation of sites -what are sites? Boundaries? General type? -methods: literature search (photos, written documents), interviews(long-time inhabitants of memories),, surface survey (walking of areas, identify features/artifacts and collecting, surface mapping) -non-intrusive -probing (testing for sub-surface features), coring(collect small-scale sub-surface material and stratigraphy), Shovel Test Pits ( features, artifacts and stratigraphy on small scale)
