Caitlin’Rose ’ Explication’Paper’ ’ Fall,’2012 ’ Mediators’ (Deleuze)’ Throughout’our’education ,’we’have’learned’ what’movement’is’and’how’it’occurs.’ Traditionally,’our’conception’of’ motion’has’been’one’in’wh ich’we,’as’individuals,’ are’the’ origin’of’movement. ’ Deleuze’ describes’ how’sports’ca n’ca use’us’to’look’at’ this’concept’in’a’ different’way. ’ In’sports’such’as’running,’we’are’a’source’of’ movement:’the’moment’our’feet’make ’ contact’with’the’track,’the’intended’motion’ begins.’Yet,’with’ other’activities’that’developed’after’running,’such’as’surfing ,’ there’ is’no’point’of’leverage.’We’enter’a’wave’and’no’longer’become’the’starting’source ’ of’ movement.’Instead,’ we’are’what’Deleuze’re fers’to’as’“putting’into -orbit”’ (121).’ Rather’than’a’violation’of’our’original’values,’the’analysis’of’movement’is’blocked .’ Because’of’this’restriction,’we’rest’in’a’constitutional’state’where’concepts’such’as motion’are’recognized’as’‘abstract.±’ ’ This’is’the’first’example’that’Deleuze’gives,’ regarding’modernism’being’the’cause’of’problems’i n’the’contemporary’world .’ ’ Deleuze’ says’that’we’are’currently’in’“a’period’of’reaction” ’ (121):’Rather’than’
