Caitlin’Rose ’ Explication’Paper’ ’ Fall,’2012 ’ Alfred’Korzybski ’ (Postman)’ ’ Language’is’a’map,’which’we’use’to’communicate:’at’least,’this’is’what’Alfred’ Korzybski’believes.’ In’many’ways,’Korzybski±s’notions’behind’this’theory’are understandable.’Language’sets’the’tone’of’the’c onversation’and’the’rules’of’ language’are’followed’when’we’undergo’communication’processes.’However,’this’ “map”’idea’is’simply’not’a’strong’enough’metaphor:’the’concept’of’communication’ as’a’whole’is’far’too’ widespread’ and’ever’changing’to’be’compared’to’s omething’so’ concrete.’ Communication’ is’a’cycle’that’never’ stops;’ it’is’it±s’own’“territory.”’Just’as’ communication’is’not’limited,’territory’is’different’from’mapping.’Despite’the’flaws’ within’his’map’metaphor ,’Korzybski’has’numerous’theories,’which’shoul d’still’be’ considered’and’practiced:’This’is’ what’Neil’Postman’seeks’to’convey ’ in’this’writing’ piece.’ ’ Alfred’Korzybski’is’known’to’be’the’founder’of’general’semantics,’referring’ to’the’scientific’study’o f’meaning’in’language.’General’s emantics’is’interes ted’in’the’ environment’ that’ we’create’with’our’language’and’our’communication’processes.’
