Grendel feels he has been betrayed by this sort of meaning before. Beowulf says it is all about making something, meaning is not in lasting, it is in making something, it is in the process of making something new. Grendel is a tragic figure because he never had the opportunity to create in that waySword is enchanted by giants There is the epic written by a whole society over hundreds of years, and there is Grendel which is a novel fictional and created by gardner Almost oxymoronic that Gulliver is on his knees, if he wants his freedom why doesn’t he take it? He lacks a sense of proportion. If he wants to be a man and be free he simply needs to act like one. This reminds us of another quality of Gulliver, he is fundamentally as decent a person as ever there was. He feels the six inch people have treated him with great grace so he will respond in kind. His sense of decency binds him.
