January 27, 2006 Bio 102 lecture 3: mendelian genetics ::::::::: WRAPPING UP ::::::::::: Clicker Question 1: B  Synapsis is Unique to Meiosis; Note: You don’t need to know the substages of Prophase Homologous chromosomes line up using synapteal complex Recombination Nodules – What does the crossing over actually happens Chiasmata – Where crossing over happens.  After crossing over has occurred, you have recombinant chromatids. How Many Different Gametes? From Independent Assortment: o No crossing over: 2N o Crossing Over: 2^N w/ Random Fertilization o N (X+1)  o An insane amount of variability. Think about this: Humans have 23 pairs of homologous pairs, so: o w/ Indep Assortment: 2  23  = 8 million combinations o Add mating, you get 64 million o Add crossing over, and you can’t even count that high.
