Introduction/Purpose/Procedure: The purpose of this lab is to explore the nature of simple harmonic motion. Two experiments are conducted to show the correlation between simple and damped harmonic motion. First, we need to measure the spring constant in order to evaluate the data that we will collect further in the experiment. To do this, we hang a series of weights from a spring, and use a meter stick standing vertically next to the spring to measure the displacement of each weight. From this, we plot force vs displacement to arrive at the spring constant. In the first experiment, we attach the weight to the end of the spring, and let it oscillate freely. The top of the spring is hung from a force transducer, and the FT measures the voltage over a given interval. The voltage can be thought of as the force acting against the FT. Next, in order to make the system exhibit damped harmonic motion, we hang the magnetic weight from the spring system, and let it oscillate through a metal tube. The tube and the metallic weight have a electromagnetic interaction, which acts as a damping force. From here, we use excel to analyze the data and determine the period, frequency, and quality factor. Theory/Equations:
