Beckett was a homosexual and battling AIDS but had done his best to conceal his sexuality and illness from the firm in fear of being discriminated against. When the firm eventually found out, leaders were determined to find a reason to dismiss him from his position. With the help of lawyer Joe Miller, played by Denzel Washington, Beckettfought to shed light on the unethical and discriminatory behavior of the firm, winning a lawsuit against them right before Beckett lost his battle to AIDS.Although Beckett had exceeded the expectations asked of him at the firm, he was wrongfully fired for what the firm said was incompetency.
