David Padilla Chem 1215L Section 7 September 13 2020 Paper Chromatography of a Metal Cation Paper chromatography was used to separate and identify the cations in an unknown solution. The unknown solution was determined to contain Ferric Nitrate and Nickel Nitrate Introduction Paper chromatography is a quick and simple method of separation which can reveal cations based on their affinities towards the paper. Here, paper chromatography was used to determine the composition of an unknown aqueous solution that possibly contained Fe3+, Cu2+, and Ni2+cations. The unknown solution was compared to the chromatograms of the known solutions, so that the cations within the unknown solution could be identified. Experimental Data Environment for chromatogram Contained within 1 liter beaker Eluting solution prepared from 19 milliliters of acetone and 6 milliliters of 8M HCl.
