(Cooper, Heron, & Heward, 2020). With extinction you are not withholding reinforcement, you are discontinuing that reinforcement to the client. As an RBT, I have noticed multiple behaviors in my client’s that go from being on extinction and then leading into an extinction burst. In the Applied Behavior Analysis book, extinction burst is identified as "an immediate increase in the rate of the response after removing the positive, negative, or automatic reinforcement." (Cooper, Heron, & Heward, 2020). Not only is extinction used in ABA therapy, but it also occurs in our natural environment or in real-world situations.
