The Other Side of Styx
Deborah Butterfield’s Styx offers students, faculty and guests at our school to
view artwork in a unique manner. When the amount of attention and time spent looking
at a piece of artwork is considered, it becomes clear that Styx’s presence on campus will
offer a much richer and long lasting experience. Styx can be viewed day or night, spring
or summer, fall or winter, when one is feeling happy, angry, down. Above all this, the
sculpture always offers the audience a chance to experience its form, texture and balance
in a countless number of ways.
I myself hadn’t realized this unique experience that Styx offers until starting this
assignment. Sadly after viewing it a couple of times after walking onto campus, it never
really stood out to me anymore, it just became a part of the scenery. However once I
