Typicallythe subjects of Van Gogh’s works are ordinary landscapes, fruit and people, but hisability to place so much emotion behind each brushstroke is what possibly draws so manyto his works. When Van Gogh’s works are observed up close, the viewer inevitably feelsthe weight and importance of each stroke; there is a purpose and reason for the color,angle, length, weight, and thickness of each stroke. In theCafé Terrace at Night, VanGogh challenges the assumption that nighttime is simply dark and quiet, but full of lightand activity.Van Gogh’sCafé Terrace at Nightcompleted in 1888 is a stand out amongst hisworks and offers various points that allow viewers to strongly engage with the painting.
