April 3 rd , 2021 Wesley Groll Federalism Throughout History If you do not know what federalism is then I will tell you, federalism is a type of government that has divided power between the national government and other governmental units. The federalist government was made to avoid tyranny. Federalism affects things in our daily life like, how much we pay for taxes, how fast we can drive, and the drinking age. Federalism affects the gun laws which I will talk about later but first I’ll start with the history of federalism and how it was made. Since May 25 th 1787, federalism has shared power between governments. The creators of federalism were Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and George Washington. The first 150 years of federalism was called dual federalism. The powers were divided to the states for economy, and local matters while the other half was for the national government for foreign policy, and national defense. Part of the reason that the Civil War stared was because of federalism. Southerners thought that theirs states had power of the federal government so they
