Tiera Davis Winter 2013 Environmental Science Chapter 4 Human Populations A. The difference between births and deaths means a net gain of about 2.5 more humans per second – on average in the world’s population. The U.S Bureau estimates the mid-2010 world population to be about 7 billion people and growing at 1.13 percent per year meaning we are adding roughly 79 million more 9people to the planet each year/Resource depletion+ Environmental degradation Threatens ecological life-support system that we depend on. Human ingenuity, technology, and enterprise can expand the world’s carrying capacity and allow us to overcome any problems we encounter. Larger population means a larger workforce, more geniuses, and more ideas about what to do. According to this worldview, resources are sufficient for everyone. Current shortages are only signs of greed, waste, and oppression. The main cause of environmental degradation in this is view is inequitable distribution of wealth and power rather than population size. B. Differences in Population and Resources Growth is the ultimate cause of poverty, environmental degradation. Poverty + environmental + overpopulation =deeper social and political factors. 1798 Thomas Malthus wrote an essay on the principle of population-changing the way European leaders thought about population growth. He collected evidence to show that population tended to increase at an exponential, or compound, rate while food production either remained stable or increased only slowly. He argued, human populations would outstrip their food supply and collapse into starvation, crime, and misery.
